81 percent of Medicare beneficiaries in Alaska have insurance that covers their prescription medication.  39 percent of these beneficiaries are enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan.  41 Medicare drug plans are available in the state. The lowest monthly premium in 2009 was $23.70.  There are 16 plans with deductibles of $0.  The least expensive premium for a prescription drug plan that covers generic medication within the coverage gap is $75.30.  There are also 6 plans in Alaska that featre a $0 dedictible for people who meet the criteria for limited income.

The Senior Benefits Program started Aug. 1, 2007, serving residents up to age 65. The new cash benefit program for Alaska residents offers three different benefit levels based on annual income (Table below). The program no longer directly pays Medicare or insurance premiums. Enrollees receive a cash benefit, which many use for pharmaceutical coverage, but may now use for other needed purchases.

State Assistance Programs:

The Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS) funds the SHIP project to educate and counsel Alaskans about Medicare so that people make optimal choices in utilizing Medicare health insurance and have access to local counseling.

This program can be used for Medicare copays, non-covered Rx products, or non-health needs such as housing and food.
