Alaska Medicare

In Alaska 81% of Medicare beneficiaries have prescription drug coverage, including 39% with a Part D plan. There are 41Medicare drug plans available in the state. The lowest monthly premium in 2009 was $23.80. There are 16 plans that have $0 deductibles. $75.20 is the lowest monthly premium for a prescription drug plan with any generic coverage in the coverage gap. There are also 6 plans in Alaska that have a premium of $0 for people who qualify for Extra Help.

The Senior Benefits Program started Aug. 1, 2007, serving residents up to age 65. The new cash benefit program for Alaska residents offers three different benefit levels based on annual income (Table below). The program no longer directly pays Medicare or insurance premiums. Enrollees receive a cash benefit, which many use for pharmaceutical coverage, but may now use for other needed purchases.

State Assistance Programs:

The Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS) funds the SHIP project to educate and counsel Alaskans about Medicare so that people make optimal choices in utilizing Medicare health insurance and have access to local counseling.

SeniorCare Cash Assistance:

This program can be used for Medicare copays, non-covered Rx products, or non-health needs such as housing and food.
