Medicare Providers - Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans were created with the passage of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. The act enabled Medicare beneficiaries to receive a portion of their coverage from private health insurers. Sometimes Medicare Advantage Plans are known as “Part C.” The government provides what is known as Original Medicare which includes Part A and B, but sometimes Original Medicare won’t cover all your health care needs and this is why Medicare Advantage was created; it fills some gaps that are left by Part A and B. In addition to covering all your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) necessities, Medicare Advantage often provides prescription drug services.

To join a Medicare Advantage plan, you must have Medicare Part A and B. You continue to pay your monthly Medicare Part B premium to Medicare and, in addition, you may possibly pay another premium for your Medicare Advantage Plan in order to gain the extra benefits offered by this plan. Despite both premiums, your costs for services under Medicare Advantage could be lower than under the Original Medicare plan.

Medicare Advantage Plans include: Medicare Health Maintenance Organization (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS), and Medicare Special Needs Plans. In most HMOs, you can only go to doctors, specialists, or hospitals on the plan’s list except in an emergency. In PPOs, you pay less if you use doctors, hospitals, and providers that belong to the network but you can also use doctors, hospitals, and providers outside the network for an additional charge. For PFFS plans, you may go to any Medicare-approved doctor or hospital that accepts the plan’s payment. The insurance plan, rather than the Medicare Program decides how much it pays and how much you pay for the services you receive. Medicare Special Needs Plans provides Original Medicare and additional services to those who can benefit from special care for chronic illness, care management of multiple diseases, and focused care management.

Beneficiaries receive an extended amount of healthcare coverage from private health insurers. Enrollee’s benefits can be extensive or minimized depending on the plan chosen.
