Florida has a prescription drug assistance option for eligible individuals called Extra Help. Extra Help is available for individuals who have incomes less than $15,600 for individuals and $21,000 for couples.

Those who are Qualifying Individuals (QI) are eligible to have Medicare premiums for Part B paid. To be eligible, these individuals must be enrolled in Medicare Part A, must be a US citizen or qualified noncitizen, a Florida resident, have a Social Security number or apply for one, apply for any other benefits to which they may be entitled, and disclose any third party liability. The income limit for QIs is $1,170 for an individual and $1,575 for a couple.

Medicare Part D plans available for Florida residents in 2009 will include Aetna Medicare Rx Premier, Health Net Orange Option 1, United AARP Saver, and Humana Standard. In South Florida, monthly premiums may rise about 20%. Despite the increase in plan premiums, in some areas more plans will be added. In Broward County, seniors will choose between 142 prescription-only plans and in Palm Beach County, 130.

However, it does look like the coverage gap may be widening starting in 2009 and, with some Medicare insurance plans changing in coverage details, now is the time to research what your Medicare insurance plan will be offering in the new year and how much it will cost you. During Open Enrollment Period, which begins November 15 and ends December 31, you may change to a more comprehensive plan for your needs free of cost. Our Medicare specialists have all the information you need about new rates and coverage for 2009. Contact one of these specialists from MedicareSolutions.com and discuss your plan options.
