In 2008, there were 18 Medicare Prescription Drug Plans that were Low-Income Subsidy Eligible. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently released the 2009 low-income premium subsidy amounts for Medicare Part D plans, the maximum monthly premium that will be paid by CMS for those who qualify for “Extra Help.” In 2009, this amount for GA residents will be $29.16. If a person received the low-income subsidy enrolls in a Medicare Part D plan which has a higher premium, this individual is responsible for paying the difference. People who are eligible for Medicare Rx Extra help are those who have combined savings, investments, and real estate not worth more than $11,710 for an individual and $23,410 for couples.

Georgia also participates in the Medicare Savings Program which pays for some of the costs of Medicare, including the Part B premium, deductibles, and copays. The amount of assistance you receive depends on your income and your assets. People who get Medicare and earn about $1,168.63 per month for an individual and $1,560.13 per month for a married couple are eligible to apply for the Medicare Savings Program.

It is equally important for those who do not qualify for these GA programs to research their options for Medicare. What some seniors do not know is that Medicare insurance plans will be changing for 2009. This could include changes in costs, but also coverage terms, depending on what plan you are currently enrolled in. In fact, some plans are even being dropped by Medicare insurance carriers for the New Year. Even if you are satisfied with the plan you currently hold, there may be a more comprehensible plan for your needs available in 2009. There is no reason to feel that you are alone in choosing a new Medicare insurance plan.
