Some Ohio residents may be eligible for the Medicare Premium Assistance Program (MPAP) which helps people who are eligible for Medicare and have limited income and assets. These individuals can get help with the cost of one or more of the following: Medicare premiums, Medicare deductibles, or Medicare coinsurance.

Qualified Medicare Beneficiaries (QMBs) are eligible if their income monthly is 100% below the Federal Poverty level. For 2008, this amount for an individual per month was $867, and for a couple $1,167.

Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiaries (SLMBs) are eligible if their monthly income is 120% below the Federal Poverty level. For 2008, this amount for an individual per month was $1,040 and for a couple $1,400.

Finally, Qualified Individuals (QI-1s) are available if their monthly income is 135% below the Federal Poverty Level. For 2008, this amount for an individual per month was $1,170 and for a couple $1,575.

It is also important to keep in mind that each year, Medicare Open Enrollment Period takes place between November 15 and December 31st. During this time, you are able to change your Medicare insurance plan free of cost. However, it is the individual’s responsibility to research important information such as what plans will be available in the New Year, and at what costs (premiums often increase each year and coverage details change). You don’t have to feel that you need to handle such an important decision on your own. At MedicareSolutions.com, our Medicare specialists have all the information about 2009 plans and rates and will help you find which one is the most affordable and comprehensible for your needs. Again, our service is no cost to you.
