Louisiana had 10 Medicare Prescription Plans that were Low-Income Subsidy eligible for 2009, but it looks like this number will be decreasing for 2010. Since plans and rates change at the start of every year, it is important to gain all information possible in the months leading up to what is known as Open Enrollment Period, the time where you are able to switch your Medicare insurance plan free of cost. Open Enrollment period begins November 15 and ends December 31. Louisiana participates in the Louisiana Medicare Savings Program, which could help pay part of your medical costs, including Medicare premiums or other out-of-pocket expenses, and your monthly premium for your Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. The Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act of 1988 added a limited range of Medicaid benefits to a group of eligible persons called Qualified Medicare Beneficiaries (QMB). In 1990 Congress increased Medicare cost-sharing amounts to a group called Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiaries (SLMB). There is also a group known as Qualified Individuals (QI-1). In order to be eligible for QMB, your individual gross income must be less than $851 and couples gross income must be less than $1,141.SLBMs must have a gross income less than $1,021 for individuals and $1,369 for couples. Finally, QI-1s must have a gross income less than $1,149 for individuals and $1,541 for couples.
