Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans were created with the passage of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. The act enabled Medicare beneficiaries to receive a portion of their coverage from private health insurers. Sometimes Advantage Plans are known as “Part C.” The government provides what is known as Original Medicare which includes Part A and  Part B.  Sometimes Original Medicare won’t cover all health services and needs ds and this is why Medicare Advantage was created; it fills some gaps that are left by Part A and B. In addition to covering all your hospital and medical insurance necessities, Medicare Advantage often provides prescription drug services.

In order to qualify for Medicare Advantage, you must be entitled to both Part A and Part B. You are still responsible for your Part B monthly premium and may possibly pay another premium for your Advantage plan.  Some Advantage plans offer additional benefits for an extra cost. Even if you pay both premiums, your costs for services under Medicare Advantage could be lower than what you would pay through traditional Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans include: Medicare Health Maintenance Organization (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS), and Medicare Special Needs Plans. Most HMO plans require you to utilize health care providers within the HMO network, unless you need emergency medical care. In PPOs, providers within the network will cost less for you, but you can also visit specialists, hospitals, and physicians outside the PPO network, but at an extra charge to you. PFFS plans allow you to visit the provider of your choice, so long as that doctor consents to the PFFS terms of payment. The PFFS organization determines what it will pay and how much you will reimburse for your medical services. Medicare Special Needs Plans provides Original Medicare and additional services to those who can benefit from special care for chronic illness, care management of multiple diseases, and focused care management.
